A Historical and Momentus Occasion
On May 6, 2018 – the 10th anniversary of the fire that damaged Main Building of Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) in San Antonio, Texas, and during the Congregation of Divine Providence’s annual celebration of their founder, Blessed John Martin Moye’s, Feast Day, the Sisters of Divine Providence formally transferred the care of Sacred Heart Conventual Chapel to OLLU.
This official transfer took place in the presence of the Sisters, their (lay) Associates, supporters in mission, family and friends. Two former Superior Generals, Sister Jane Ann Slater and Sister Ann Petrus joined Superior General, Sister Pearl Ceasar, and OLLU President, Dr. Diane E. Melby, in the ritual that took place in Sacred Heart Conventual Chapel. Sister Pearl shared the many reasons the chapel has been special for the Sisters and is considered sacred. “It has housed our most sacred rituals – our professions of vows, our jubilees, and the funerals of our leaders. It has also been a place of quiet refuge for personal prayer and meditation, and our faithful daily celebration of the Eucharist together.” She expressed how the Sisters now entrust this most sacred space to OLLU, and believe it will “continue to draw people to the Providence of our God.”
Dr. Melby, in turn, shared the Chapel’s significance to the OLLU community and the San Antonio West Side community and pledged “that this chapel will remain at the center of our community for centuries to come.” Applause followed the signing of the transfer document by Sister Pearl and Dr. Melby. May our Provident God continue to provide for the care of all of his beloved.
