The Sisters of Divine Providence at the Memorial to the Lost

The Sisters of Divine Providence participated in the “Memorial to the Lost” event on Saturday, November 18th. The procession began at 8:30 am at St. Michael’s Church and proceeded to the Alamodome.  2,700 t-shirts lined Cherry Street, each one symbolizing a Bexar County resident lost to gun violence over the last 5 years; white t-shirts represented those who died by gun-related suicide. The involvement of Sister Jane Ann Slater, Sister Midory Wu, and Sister Maria Cruz De la Cruz Botello, highlights the Congregation’s commitment to supporting life-giving communities and their dedication to peace and justice.

Initiated by the faith-based nonprofit Heeding God’s Call to End Gun Violence in Philadelphia, this initiative has united diverse groups, including faith communities, in Pennsylvania and New Jersey, leading to significant legislative and policy changes. Texas Impact has played a key role in bringing this impactful model to San Antonio.

The march aligned with District 9 City Councilman John Courage’s Gun Exchange event at the Alamodome on the next day. This collaboration emphasizes a comprehensive, community-driven approach to addressing gun violence in San Antonio, showcasing the essential role of community involvement in fostering a safer, more compassionate society.
