Sisters of Divine Providence Advocate for Justice at the 2024 Cesar Chávez March for Justice and Aguila Awards

In a demonstration of solidarity and commitment to social justice, the Sisters of Divine Providence, alongside Dr. Abel Chávez, President of Our Lady of the Lake University, and his wife, Naomi Chávez, ACDP, participated in the César E. Chávez March for Justice and Aguila Awards. This March, a revered San Antonio tradition since 1997, saw its 28th annual gathering on March 23, 2024, drawing thousands to commemorate the legacy of the legendary labor leader and civil rights activist, César Chávez.

Organized by the César E. Chávez Legacy & Educational Foundation, the march underscores the unity and resilience of diverse groups. The march started at the historic intersection of Guadalupe and Brazos near the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, offering a reflective 2-mile journey towards Hemisfair Civic Park. The march concluded with a vibrant celebration at Hemisfair, marked by music, food trucks, and speeches from special guests.

Later that evening, at the César E. Chávez Legacy and Educational Foundation’s Aguila Awards Gala, Dr. Abel Chávez received the Soaring Aguila for Leadership Award, recognizing his remarkable leadership and achievements since his appointment in 2022. Under his guidance, Our Lady of the Lake University has seen significant advancements, securing over $31 million in donations and grants, and elevating the institution’s profile through extensive community and leadership engagements.

“It is an honor to receive this award from the César E. Chávez Legacy and Educational Foundation,” Dr. Abel Chávez said. “This award would not be possible without the support and hard work of our tremendous faculty and staff at OLLU.” His dedication to fostering an environment of growth, learning, and social responsibility mirrors the values championed by César Chávez and resonates with the mission of the Sisters of Divine Providence.

The participation of the Sisters of Divine Providence and the recognition of Dr. Abel Chávez are examples of their enduring commitment to social justice, community service, and educational excellence. Their involvement serves as a reminder of the power of unity and collective action in the ongoing fight for equality and justice.
