CDP Sisters Participate in 29th Annual César Chávez March

Tomorrow, the 29th Annual César E. Chávez March for Justice will start at the Intersection of Guadalupe and Brazos next to Guadalupe Theater. The morning program starts at 9am with the march heading to Hemisfair Park starting at 10am.

Leading up to this event, a press conference was held on February 26 with the steps of Sacred Heart Chapel at Our Lady of the Lake University serving as the inspiring backdrop. Sister Rose Kruppa opened the gathering reciting the “Prayer of the Farm Worker’s Struggle,” an invocation that honors the labor and perseverance of those fighting for justice. She was joined by OLLU student Sophia Santacruz.

Among the attendees were notable figures such as Ernest Martinez, Chair of the César E. Chávez Legacy and Educational Foundation (CECLEF); John Gary Herrera, CEO of VIA; Mayor Ron Nierenberg, standing in for his wife, Erika Prosper; Henry Rodriguez, co-founder of the March for Justice Committee; Arturo Rodriguez, President of the Farm Workers Union in Arizona; and Grand Marshal, Air Force veteran, and OLLU graduate, Col. Gil Coronado. The CDP Elected Leadership Team along with Sisters Madeleine Zimmerer and Deborah Fuchs were also in attendance, reaffirming the Congregation’s steadfast support for the cause.

In the days leading up to the march, a few Sisters who could not march, found a way to make their presence felt. With creativity and purpose, they crafted signs that will be carried by marchers tomorrow. These handmade signs, adorned with messages of unity and empowerment, reflect the Sisters’ enduring commitment to advocacy.

VIA Metropolitan Transit will provide complimentary Park & Ride Service to and from the César E. Chávez March from Our Lady of the Lake University.

Each year, thousands of community members, students, and leaders march in honor of César E. Chávez and Dolores Huerta, continuing their legacy of advocacy for workers’ rights, social justice, and education. The Sisters of Divine Providence will be represented, ensuring that their call for justice continues to echo through the streets of San Antonio. As they have for generations, they stand firm in their commitment to the dignity and rights of all people, echoing Chávez’s timeless words: “¡Sí Se Puede!”
