With Reverence and Sorrow: Remembering Pope Francis
It is with deep sorrow and profound reverence that we join the global Church in mourning the passing of His Holiness, Pope Francis. A shepherd of remarkable humility and unwavering faith, Pope Francis led with courage, tenderness, and a prophetic voice that called the world to love more deeply. He leaves behind a legacy of extraordinary compassion, inclusion, and peace.
Throughout his pontificate, Pope Francis modeled a Church that listens, heals, and walks with all people, especially those often forgotten or cast aside. He challenged the world to see God in the faces of the poor, the migrant, the imprisoned, and the brokenhearted. His message was simple but urgent: that love without conditions and peace without exceptions are not only possible, but necessary.
As we reflect on his life and leadership, we are reminded that faith is not a retreat from the world but a call to transform it. Pope Francis reminded us that being people of faith means being people of action, people of welcome, and people of hope.
We, together, are rooted in the charism of Providence. At Our Lady of the Lake University and within the Congregation of Divine Providence, his legacy holds special significance. His call to go to the margins, his unwavering focus on justice, and his belief in a Church that walks with others reflect the very mission we are called to live each day. His papacy exemplified the trust in Divine Providence that inspires us to lead with mercy and act with hope, even amid uncertainty.
As a Catholic university founded by the Sisters of Divine Providence, OLLU stands as a living expression of Pope Francis’s message of encounter and accompaniment. Today, we reaffirm our shared commitment to be a community where every person is known, seen, welcomed, and loved. A university and a congregation animated by compassion, truth, and solidarity.
In this Jubilee Year, we are all Pilgrims of Hope, inviting all members of our community to pause in prayer and reflection. May we draw strength from Pope Francis’s enduring message and honor his memory by continuing to build a world rooted in peace, justice, and love.

Es con profundo pesar y reverencia que nos unimos a la Iglesia universal en el duelo por el fallecimiento de Su Santidad, el Papa Francisco. Pastor de profunda humildad y fe inquebrantable, el Papa Francisco lideró con valentía, ternura y una voz profética que llamó al mundo a amar más profundamente. Deja un legado de extraordinaria compasión, inclusión y paz.
A lo largo de su pontificado, el Papa Francisco modeló una Iglesia que escucha, que sana y que camina con todas las personas, especialmente con quienes a menudo son olvidados o excluidos. Desafió al mundo a ver a Dios en el rostro del pobre, del migrante, del encarcelado y del afligido. Su mensaje fue sencillo pero urgente: el amor sin condiciones y la paz sin excepciones no solo son posibles, sino necesarios.
Al reflexionar sobre su vida y liderazgo, recordamos que la fe no es un escape del mundo, sino un llamado a transformarlo. El Papa Francisco nos recordó que ser personas de fe significa ser personas de acción, de acogida y de esperanza.

Su pontificado ejemplificó la confianza en la Divina Providencia, que nos inspira a liderar con misericordia y a actuar con esperanza, incluso en medio de la incertidumbre.
