Sister Ann Carmel Maggio, CDP

Sister Ann Carmel Maggio, CDP, entered eternal life on July 4, 2020 at the age of 94. She was born on July 14, 1925 in Natchitoches, Louisiana to Samuel Charles and Carmelite Marie Maggio. Her baptismal name was Grace Carmelite. Sister Ann Carmel had five brothers and five sisters. She attended St. Mary School and High School, and prior to entering the convent, earned a Bachelor of Science in Applied Science from Northwestern University, in Natchitoches, Louisiana. She answered God’s call to become a Sister of Divine Providence on October 13, 1946 and professed first vows on June 22, 1948. She was grateful and happy for the years she taught and worked in the medical technology field.
After eleven years of teaching math and science in Texas and Oklahoma, Sister Ann Carmel became certified in Biomedical Technology at Santa Rosa Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. She worked in Wilson County Memorial Hospital in Floresville, Texas, St. Ann Hospital in Abilene, Texas, University of Oklahoma Medical Hospital in Norman, Oklahoma and Nix Hospital in San Antonio, Texas. She loved the medical field and worked hard to provide efficient and accurate lab services to her patients.
Sister Ann Carmel always made herself available to others. She participated in various other activities in the medical field: Coordinator of the Candy Stripe Programs and the Women’s Hospital Auxiliary Program, and Coordinator and Educator in Suicide Prevention Program. For her local community, she served as a vacation school volunteer, helped with various parish projects, volunteered in civic elections and marshaled the 12th hole during a pro-am golf tournament at the Dominion Country Club. She always lived and served with a grateful, positive and pleasant demeanor.
She is survived by siblings Sadie Dark, Theresa Janes, Henry (Nita) Maggio, John (Billie) Maggio, and all her Sisters of Divine Providence. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents Samuel Charles and Carmelite Marie Maggio and siblings: Rosalie Fulco, Jeannette Gunter, Mary Willis, Anthony Maggio, Charles Maggio, and Joe Maggio and their spouses.
A rosary followed by sharing of memories will take place on Wednesday, July 8, 2020. A Funeral Mass will take place on Thursday, July 9, 2020. All services will take place in Annunciation Chapel at Our Lady of the Lake Convent. Safety precautions will be observed, call 210-587-1152 for more details.
