Building Closer Connections Between OLLU and CDP in México

Six bilingual graduate students and two faculty members, Dr. Casey Klinger and Patricia Kimes, from the Woolfolk School of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD) at Our Lady of the Lake University travelled to Querétaro, Querétaro Mexico to provide speech and language services to children and adults. Casa Moye, led by Sister Estela Guadalupe Tovar with the assistance of Sisters Susana Cárdenas, Maria Cruz De La Cruz, Angela Baeza, Cecilia González, and Ely Carrasco provided food, lodging and camaraderie for the visitors from May 19 through June 2, 2018.

The students and the two faculty supervisors collaborated with four programs in Querétaro.

  1. They screened children ages 3-6 from the Casa de Cuna preschool for possible speech and language disorders. Five full evaluations were conducted and comprehensive reports were completed in Spanish. During the two-week period, students provided language enrichment lessons for the children at Casa de Cuna.
  2. In addition, they participated in the Escuela Móvil project providing lessons to the children on the streets of Querétaro alongside Sister Ely and her colleague, Jessika Martínez.
  3. Furthermore, the OLLU students met with El Arca, a facility that serves adults with intellectual disabilities. The students assessed the communication needs of three of the clients during the first week of their stay and returned the second week to present recommendations to improve the communication skills of the clients.
  4. The group was also invited to tour CRIQ, a rehabilitation facility in Querétaro. Based on the contacts made at CRIQ, the Woolfolk group was able to make referrals for speech, language and hearing services for some of the individuals they encountered at Casa de Cuna, Escuela Móvil and El Arca.

Overall, it was a very enriching cultural experience for all involved. The hospitality of the sisters was greatly appreciated by the faculty and students. The CDP Sisters in Querétaro have extended an invitation to the faculty of the Woolfolk School to return again next May with another group of students.
