In Service To Our Own
Sister Imelda Maurer, CDP, is the director and founder of In Service to Our Own. She describes this ministry as follows:
The focus of my ministry as a Sister of Divine Providence is capsulized in this statement:
Bringing our rich legacy of ministry to others
– competent, compassionate, creative, visionary and prophetic –
to the ministry of service to our own.
We Sisters are a group of aging women in an aging and ageist society. This is not an accident, but a movement of Providence. We have a narrow window of opportunity at this pivotal time in our history to bear prophetic witness by our lives and our actions to Gospel values which proclaim that life is sacred. We acknowledge that when we honor our own aging and that of our Sisters.
Such honor is most effectively expressed in intentional efforts within Congregational retirement settings to provide a living environment that enables each Sister to live life fully engaged to the greatest extent possible. It is most fully expressed when the ministry of service to our frail, elderly members is characterize by a person-centered program and environment in which choice and autonomy take precedence over task and alleged efficiency, where the Sister knows she is HOME where privacy, security, dignity and relationships are acknowledged and honored.
The work of consciousness raising for the purpose of systemic change is executed through workshops, consulting, presentations and organizing through the structure of a 501(c)(3) organization, In Service to Our Own.
