CDP Sisters Celebrate Unity at the Nation’s Largest Martin Luther King Jr. Day March in San Antonio

On Monday, January 20, Sisters Jane Ann Slater, Lourdes Leal, Joyce Jilek, and Anita Brenek once again joined hundreds of thousands of people to participate in the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day March in San Antonio, Texas. The Sisters marched alongside the Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) group.

This year marked the 38th Martin Luther King Jr. March, the largest in the nation. The event began at 10 a.m. at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Academy, with the marchers making their way along a 2.75-mile route to Pittman-Sullivan Park. Many participants stayed afterward for a vibrant celebration featuring speeches, multicultural performances on the main stage, and areas dedicated to health and wellness, youth activities, food, merchandise, and informational booths. The event provided a meaningful opportunity for attendees to reflect on equity, justice, progress, and opportunity.

CDP Sisters: Living Their Mission

The Sisters of Divine Providence (CDPs) have long been committed to social justice and community involvement. Their participation in the march reflects the mission outlined in their Chapter Statement: “Entrusted with the flame of God’s loving Providence, we Sisters of Divine Providence are committed to sharing its light of hope with all people. We live the mission of being the loving face of our Provident God, who delights in and provides for all creation, leading and guiding it to abundant life.”

By marching, the Sisters exemplified their ongoing commitment “to co-create a world of healing, inclusivity and unity, where every life and all creation are honored and valued.” Events such as this reinforce their dedication to fostering equity, justice, and compassion, inspired by the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
