About the Sacred Heart Conventual Chapel and Auditorium

Ego sum Via, Veritas, et Vita. (“I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life.”)

Sacred Heart Conventual Chapel, our beautiful English Gothic chapel, was a 28-year project, the dream of Mother Florence Walter, Superior General of the Congregation of Divine Providence from 1886-1925.  It took many years with great effort and numerous sacrifices of the Sisters before our chapel became a reality.  The architect chosen was Leo Dielmann and the construction was contracted to Mr. A. Fuessel.  Construction began October 17, 1921.  Sacred Heart Conventual Chapel stands today, a dream fulfilled.  It is as close to the hearts of all Sisters of Divine Providence today as it was for the Sisters who participated in the first opening.

The chapel has deep meaning also for the thousands of Our Lady of the Lake University, Providence Catholic School and St. Martin Hall faculty, staff and students who gather for liturgy.  The chapel has always been important to the people in the San Antonio community at large and to the West Side neighborhood in particular.

Friends are always welcome to liturgies and with the Sisters they fill the chapel at the annual Moye Feast Day Mass (first Sunday in May), Jubilee Mass (traditionally in June on the Sunday before General Assembly) and many other special events.  The beautiful chapel continues to be a source of pride to the Sisters and to the city.  It is also a witness to the continued presence of the Congregation of Divine Providence and Our Lady of the Lake University on San Antonio’s West Side for more than a century.
