Divine Recognition
Sister Bernadette Bezner is a Chaplain in a 300 bed hospital. Her ministry allows her to witness miracles and provide comfort through presence and prayer. The following is her account of a miracle that touched her life.
Today is a regular day. I am approaching the room of a long-time patient. Patient has been here since Thanksgiving and it is near Valentine’s Day. So far I have not spoken with the patient in words. She has been on a ventilator all this time. Her mother is always present and she helps interpret what Brigid wants to communicate.
This day I gown up (for Isolation/Infection Control) and walk in. I see Brigid awake, alert and holding a Menu. Immediately I know something BIG has changed and changed for the better!
As I approach the bed, Brigid says, “Hello! Sister Bernadette.” Never have I known that patient knows my name. I am so happy. Smiling. Exultant. Of course, Mom is thrilled also!
I greet Brigid and we talk. She has been inside there all along. I am so happy to hear her voice and learn who this person is within. A confident woman, full of life and vigor. And she is funny.
Eventually she asks me to pray, and I ask her for what shall we pray? She pauses a moment. Then she says, “Divine recognition.”
Divine recognition – to be known and recognized as who Brigid is, at this moment in her life, having survived Intensive Care, coma, surgeries, countless and endless IVs and test, suffering beyond imagination and description. Divine Recognition – “Oh, God, that you would know me, here, where I am, all I have been through, that you would stay with me and heal me. Give me strength.”
Brigid continues to be an inspiration to me and all who meet her. She touches so many lives through her suffering and pain.
