OLLU Students Paint in the Martha Rose Lange Peace Garden

On a peaceful spring morning this week, students from Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) gathered in the Martha Rose Lange Peace Garden to paint still lifes as part of Professor González’ painting class. In the Peace Garden, this art session felt like something more, an expression of relationship, presence, and connection.

The Peace Garden, located on the grounds of the OLL Convent Center, is named in honor of Sister Martha Rose Lange, CDP, the garden reflects the Sisters of Divine Providence’s long-standing commitment to the care of Earth and community. As students set up their supplies, the garden was a peaceful gathering ground for reflection and creativity. Here, under the trees and beside blooming flowers, students connected with a spiritual heritage that has shaped OLLU for generations.

That heritage dates back to the 19th century, when the Sisters of Divine Providence first arrived in Texas. From the beginning, their presence fostered spaces of learning, empowerment, and faith. Yet, their legacy isn’t one of the past; their presence continues to bless these spaces, from the Peace Garden to the iconic halls of Main Building. Today, OLLU students studying cybersecurity, social work, science, and the arts all carry forward this legacy.

As spring blooms once again in the Martha Rose Lange Peace Garden, it’s the perfect season to visit. Gather your grandchildren, your family, or simply your thoughts, and take a peaceful stroll through this cherished space. One wonderful opportunity to do so is on Sunday, April 27, following the Celebrating Providence Mass. We invite you to join us for the Mass at 2 p.m. and stay afterward for fellowship with the Sisters and enjoy the beauty of the Peace Garden. RSVP here: https://www.cdptexas.org/mfd
