Sisters Join COPS/Metro Meeting to Advocate for Local Issues

On Sunday, September 15, nine of our Sisters, including members of the Congregation of Divine Providence (CDP), Ursuline Sisters (OSUs), and Missionary Catechists of Divine Providence (MCDPs), gathered at Sacred Heart Parish for a COPS/Metro meeting. We joined approximately 350 other community members, united by a common cause to address pressing local concerns and rally support for crucial issues.

The agenda of the meeting included updates on housing displacement caused by the construction of the new Mission Stadium and a planned floodwater drainage pond. It also addressed the topics of gun control, the importance of Get Out The Vote efforts, and the upcoming 50th anniversary celebration of COPS/Metro on December 8.

Throughout the meeting, several personal stories were shared, illustrating the real-life impact of these issues on our local communities. Notably, we heard from Sister Jane Ann, CDP and other COPS/Metro leaders about their recent meeting with city council members. They successfully advocated for half a million dollars in relocation funds for those being displaced by the new stadium project.

The final part of the meeting featured a discussion with San Antonio Police Chief McManus, who committed to recognizing parish IDs and confirmed his attendance at the December 8 anniversary celebration.

Our participation in COPS/Metro is a reflection of our Chapter directive: “Uniting with our neighbors wherever we live and minister, we support life-giving communities, giving special focus to those living on the West Side of San Antonio.” We are proud to stand in solidarity with those advocating for justice and equality in our local community.
