Sister Eugenia Ann Stell, CDP
January 15, 1927 – July 22, 2019
Sister Eugenia Ann Stell, CDP, entered eternal life on July 22, 2019 at the age of 92. She was one of eight children born to Arthur Bradley and Eugenia M. (Ankenbruck) Stell. Her baptismal name was Martha Rose. Sister Eugenia Ann was born January 15, 1927 in Houston, Texas. She answered God’s call to become a Sister of Divine Providence on September 5, 1944 and professed first vows as a Sister of Divine Providence on June 22, 1947. As evidenced by her life-long commitment and ministry, education was important in every aspect of Sister Eugenia Ann’s life.
Sister Eugenia Ann began her educational ministry in 1947 at St. Mary’s School in downtown San Antonio. She continued teaching elementary grades in Texas and Oklahoma until 1965. She served as principal in Lawton, Oklahoma and at St. Martin Hall in San Antonio Texas. For a span of five years she served as the Diocesan Curriculum Coordinator in Oklahoma and then as the Diocesan School Supervisor in San Antonio.
All of her life Sister Eugenia Ann knew she could accomplish whatever she set out to do. She earned a Bachelor of Arts, a Masters of Arts from Columbia University and a Doctoral degree from the University of Houston. During her 14 years at Our Lady of the Lake University she was a professor for the first five years and Dean of the School of Education for the last nine. Her presence, confidence and value for education were naturally passed on to all her students. Her example proved that goals can be reached if you set your mind to do so.
She is survived by siblings Dorothy (Ronald) Staskey, Amerita Pletcher, and all her Sisters of Divine Providence. She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents Arthur Bradley and Eugenia M. (Ankenbruck) Stell and siblings Angeline (and Al) Lesenski, Mary (and Raffaele) Alessia, Herold Stell, Arthur (and Gladys) Stell, Leonard (and Jenny) Stell, and brother in law Thomas Pletcher.
The Rosary is Monday, July 29, 2019 at 4:00 p.m. and the Wake is at 6:30 p.m. A Mass of Resurrection will be Tuesday, July 30 at 11:00 a.m. All services will be in Annunciation Chapel at Our Lady of the Lake Convent Center.
