Welcome the Stranger

During their recent Chapter 2017, the Sisters of Divine Providence wrote a formal statement in response to President Trump’s executive order on immigration. In addition to this statement, the Sisters each signed postcards that will be mailed to President Trump and U.S. Senators John Cornyn and Ted Cruz asking for the revocation and non-support of this executive order.  The Sisters of Divine Providence follow the Gospel call to “welcome the stranger,” (Matthew 25:35.)

Here is the statement in both English and Spanish:

Statement on Immigration     We, the Congregation of Divine Providence of San Antonio, Texas, are rooted in the belief that God’s loving Providence permeates all that we are and all that we do.   We are committed to helping create a world grounded in God’s way of justice, freedom, peace, and love.  We are deeply disturbed by President Trump’s recent executive orders on immigration and refugee resettlement.

With the exception of Native Americans, our entire United States population is made up of immigrants. San Antonio is the vibrant, diverse community it has become due to the acceptance and collaboration of its many cultures.

Over the years and particularly in the last three years, San Antonio has witnessed thousands of asylum seekers and other immigrants as they sought protection in our land which has always been a beacon of hope for immigrants. We believe that it is naive to think that defunding sanctuary cities, building a border wall costing billions of dollars, and increasing military presence will make America safer.  Our border communities will suffer economically and families will continue to be torn apart.  Our immigration courts are already inundated and further reduction in funding will cause unneeded delays in processing documents of those seeking their right to asylum or citizenship.  Additionally, immigrant communities’ trust in local authority will be diminished and every undocumented person will live in fear of immediate deportation.

We are opposed to any executive order which serves to threaten border communities, force our Immigrant community members further into the shadows, and endanger those fleeing violence. We believe that these misguided executive orders do nothing to make anyone more secure and may well have the opposite effect.

We are appalled by President Trump’s order which bans residents of seven Muslim majority countries from entering the U.S. for ninety days, suspends refugee resettlement entirely for four months, and bars resettlement of Syrian refugees indefinitely. This is unconscionable in the face of the unprecedented global refugee crisis.  More than 61 million people have been displaced from their homes, more than at any time since World War II.  Some 21 million are refugees; most are children who have been forced from their homes by unthinkable violence.  The Trump administration has forced all of us to turn our backs on families who are literally running for their lives.

We decry President Trump’s attempts to limit our ability to heed the Gospel call to welcome the stranger and care for those most in need. We find it hard to believe that our beloved United States would ever deny access to persons based on their religion, race, or nationality.

We, Sisters of the Congregation of Divine Providence of San Antonio, Texas will continue to welcome refugees and minister to immigrants and to stand in solidarity with families desperately working to provide safety and security for their children. We will continue to press for restoration of refugee resettlement, relief for families, an end to needless deportations, and the closure of all family detention centers.  We will continue to advocate for compassionate bipartisan legislation that fixes our broken immigration system.

We will continue to pray for President Trump and our Congress that their hearts be opened to the common good of all as articulated in our U.S. founding documents.  Approved by the 2017 CDP Chapter on February 3, 2017

Declaración sobre Inmigración     Nosotras, la Congregación de la Divina Providencia de San Antonio, Texas, estamos arraigadas a las creencia de que el amor Providente de Dios permea todo y que nosotros somos lo que hacemos. Estamos comprometidas a ayudar a crear un mundo basado en la justicia, libertad, paz y amor a Dios.  Estamos muy perturbados por las últimas órdenes ejecutivas del Presidente Trump respecto a inmigración y reasentamiento de refugiados.

Con excepción de los Nativos Norte Americanos, toda nuestra población Estadounidense está conformado por migrantes. San Antonio es la comunidad diversa y viva resultado de la aceptación y colaboración de sus varias culturas.

Durante los años, particularmente durante los últimos tres, San Antonio ha sido testigo de buscadores de asilo y de otros migrantes en búsqueda de protección en nuestro territorio, que siempre ha sido un faro de luz para los migrantes. Pensamos que es iluso pensar que desaparecer los santuarios de los ciudadanos, construir un muro fronterizo, con un costo de millones de dólares, incrementar la presencia militar dará mayor seguridad a América.  Nuestras comunidades fronterizas sufrirán en su economía y las familias se seguirán destruyendo.  Nuestras cortes juzgados en temas de migración ya están saturados y reducirles aún más el presupuesto causaría demoras en el procesamiento de documentos de aquellos que buscan asilo o ciudadanía.  Más aún, las comunidades inmigrantes creen que las autoridades locales van a disminuir y que las personas indocumentadas vivirán en temor seguido por deportación inmediata.

Nos oponemos a cualquier orden ejecutiva que pueda amenazar comunidades fronterizas, forzando a nuestra comunidad migrante a entrar a la obscuridad poniendo en peligro a aquellos que huyen de la violencia. Creemos que estas órdenes ejecutivas no le brindan mayor seguridad a nadie, sino que, más bien tienen el efecto opuesto.

Estamos consternadas por las órdenes del Presidente Trump que le prohíben a siete países en su mayoría Musulmanes la entrada a los E. U. por 90 días, total suspensión de reasentamientos a refugiados durante 4 meses, ….. a refugiados sirios indefinidamente. Esto es una inconsciencia ante la crisis global sin precedentes, de refugiados.  Más de 61 millones de personas han sido desplazadas de sus casas, más que en la II Guerra Mundial.  Aproximadamente dos millones son refugiados, de los cuales mucho son niños que han sido forreados a dejar sus casas a causa de una violencia inimaginable.  La administración de Trump nos ha forzado a todos a darles la espalda a familias que literalmente corren por sus vidas.

Condenamos los intentos del Presidente Trump para limitar nuestra capacidad e tener presente el llamado del Evangelio para acoger al extranjero y cuidar de los más necesitados. Nos resulta difícil creer que nuestros queridos Estados Unidos negaría alguna vez, el acceso a personas por su religión, raza o nacionalidad.

Nosotras, Hermanas de la Congregación de la Divina Providencia de San Antonio, Tejas. Continuaremos acogiendo refugiados así como ejerciendo nuestro ministerio a inmigrantes en solidaridad con las familias que buscan dar seguridad a sus hijos. Continuaremos presionando para restablecer reasentamientos de refugiados, dar alivio a éstas familias, y ponerle fin a éstas deportaciones innecesarias, el cierre de centros de detención familiar.

Continuaremos abogando por ver una legislación bipartidista, compasiva para restablecer nuestro dañado sistema de inmigración.

Seguiremos orando por el Presidente Trump y nuestro Congreso para que se abran sus corazones al bien común así como lo señalan nuestros documentos fundacionales.  Aprobado por el Capítulo 2017, 3 febrero 2017
